How to Choose a Controller

There was a time when controller selection was relatively straightforward: one or more PLCs controlled overall machine operations, and a dedicated motion controller handled the motion. Today, OEMs have significantly more options from which to choose. Some PLCs can also perform simple motion control, while some motion controllers can also perform simple machine control. Programmable automation controllers (PACs) increasingly aim to commoditize the control of machines with discrete motion, while smart drives present an option for distributed control that can replace a motion controller for certain applications. Meanwhile, in the era of software defined everything, industrial PCs can be used for motion control and machine control.
