Through Hollow Multiturn Kits – Large Bore, Low Profile Encoders for Motion ControlPOSITAL’s through hollow shaft multiturn kit encoders provide superior performance on position measurement without the need for a battery or gear system. The single-turn system is based on capacitive technology and is combined with a multiturn rotation counter powered by POSITAL’s Wiegand energy harvesting system. Capacitive sensing technology is easily scalable, thereby enabling a cost-effective design for various bore diameters.  Introductory models cater to 30mm and 50mm shaft diameters, designed to be integrated into hollow shaft motors and robots. Capacitive technology also senses the entire circumference of an encoder thus providing a system that is much more tolerant of any mechanical shaft errors throughout the life of the application.

The energy harvesting system is based on the Wiegand effect and eliminates the need for backup batteries or complex gear systems. At any rotational speed, even the slowest, the Wiegand system generates short, powerful voltage pulses with each complete revolution. These pulses supply enough power to activate the rotation counter and related electronics so that the encoder will keep count of complete rotations at all times, even if these occur when the external power supply is unavailable. This principle, which has proven itself since 2005, ensures reliable, maintenance-free multiturn absolute position measurements.
